Rosin is hard and sticky: it's hardened tree sap used as varnish and on violin bows.
Violin bows have white horse hair with lots of microscopic hooks that can't grip until rosin is rubbed on to make the tiny hooks stiff enough to pluck the violin strings on a micro level! In Australia, sap from native pines Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii), Kauri Pine (Agathis australis), or Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) is mixed with beeswax to create rosin. |
Tree sap is tapped like maple syrup from pine trees and is mixed with other ingredients before being cooked and poured into a mould.
